Sludge disposal in the Port of Gothenburg

The Port of Gothenburg offers flexible and reliable treatment and disposal of sludge water for vessels calling at the port. Disposal of sludge is normally handled by barge and, in some cases, by truck. Below is information regarding sludge water disposal.

Procedures

Any order for sludge discharge operations shall be reported and requested in MSW Reportal. The request shall include the date and time of delivery as well as the amount of sludge. This shall be reported 24 hours before arrival or no later than upon departure from the port of loading/discharging if the journey lasts less than 24 hours.

Fees and Costs

Under certain circumstances, additional fees or costs for sludge water disposal may apply (see chart at the bottom of the page).

Additional fees may be incurred if:

  • The "Notification to discharge waste from vessels" is not submitted in time in accordance with Swedish law and the Port Authority's regulations, or if the discharge significantly differs from the actual notification details.
  • The waste/sludge contains foreign substances, solvents, or detergents.
  • The waste/sludge is not generated from the vessel's normal operations.
  • Drums and packages with oil residue or hazardous waste are not properly packaged and correctly labeled with their contents, or if discharge and mooring do not occur in designated locations.
  • Discharging is not carried out at the agreed time.
  • The vessel does not provide personnel for discharging sludge.
  • The pump capacity for sludge is less than an average of 5 m³ per hour.
  • A discharge that has been ordered and not canceled will be invoiced.

Responsibility

The vessel has the responsibility for the connection between the manifold and the hose. No slop water is allowed in the sludge water for disposal.

After Disposal Operation

The Chief Engineer or the officer in charge of the disposal operation must sign and stamp the delivery note together with the Master of the barge or truck.

Terms and Conditions

If the customer does not fulfill their contractual obligations regarding the above terms and conditions, the port cannot guarantee the receipt of sludge without delays or additional costs for the customer.
