ROPAX TERMINALS
One of the biggest ferry operators in the world.
Stena Line is one of the biggest ferry operators in the world. With its two centrally located terminals in Gothenburg, they transport 1.4 million passengers a year to and from Kiel and Frederikshavn. The ferries that operate from the terminal are known as ro-pax, which stands for roll-on/roll-off passenger vessel, which means that the cargo capacity of the ro-ro vessel is combined with the comfort of the passenger ferry.
Ferry services from two centrally located terminals.
Denmark Terminal:
Every day, ro-pax vessels depart from Stena Line’s centrally located Denmark Terminal bound for Frederikshavn. There are up to six departures a day during the high season from May-August, with around four departures a day during the rest of the year.
Germany Terminal:
Every day, a ro-pax vessel departs from Stena Line’s Germany Terminal bound for Kiel. From Kiel, there is easy access to large parts of Germany and the Netherlands, and also to Verona in Italy via an intermodal rail solution. The ferries that operate from the terminal are among the biggest ro-pax ferries in the world.

Shoreside connections for ferries.
Since 2011, all of Stena Line’s ferries have been shutting down their engines by the quayside at the Port of Gothenburg and used green electricity from the shore to provide their power supply onboard instead. During a ten-hour port call, diesel operation from one single vessel can generate up to 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Shutting down the engines and using onshore power brings significant environmental benefits.
The Port of Gothenburg has extensive experience of electrical connections. The first electrical connection was established in the RoRo Terminal at the Port of Gothenburg during 2000.
Maritime security outside the port area.
The ferry terminals are not located inside the port area in Gothenburg, but are protected by the ISPS code. To protect ports as a whole, and not just quayside areas, the EU has adopted Directive 2005/65/EC on enhancing port security.
The code applies to vessels and port installations, i.e. places where people or cargo are transferred to and from vessels or where port services are provided.
