Tranzero Initiative recognized as role model by the World Economic Forum

Published: 2025-01-28
The Tranzero Initiative has been highlighted by the World Economic Forum as a leading example of sustainable energy transition. The report, “Unleashing the Full Potential of Industrial Clusters: Infrastructure Solutions for Clean Energies”, presents Tranzero as one of 19 pioneering examples from 9 countries, showcasing how industrial clusters are accelerating the transition to fossil-free energy solutions more efficiently.

Tranzero Initiative – driving the transition to fossil-free transport

Since 2021, the Port of Gothenburg, together with Volvo Group, Scania, and Stena Line, has led the Tranzero Initiative – a collaborative effort to reduce the environmental impact of the transport sector. The goal is to significantly cut CO₂ emissions related to Northern Europe’s largest port, thereby lowering the carbon footprint of customers across the global value chain. The initiative focuses on developing infrastructure for electrification and hydrogen, alongside priority measures to improve transport efficiency.

Key Contributions of the Tranzero Initiative

The Port of Gothenburg launched the Tranzero Initiative in collaboration with key industry partners to accelerate emission reductions in the transport sector, with a focus on electrification and alternative fuels for both maritime and land-based transport. Through this initiative, we have:

  • Developed innovative solutions to reduce CO₂ emissions across the transport chain.
  • Established strong partnerships between stakeholders in transport, energy, and logistics.
  • Created the foundations for long-term, sustainable growth within the port area and beyond.

World Economic Forum highlights Tranzero as a best practice

The World Economic Forum’s report, developed in collaboration with Accenture and EPRI, analyzes how industrial clusters worldwide can drive the transition to fossil-free energy. Tranzero Initiative is highlighted as one of 19 leading examples from 9 countries, showcasing how industry players have:

  • Optimized resources through collaboration.
  • Leveraged economies of scale to accelerate deployment.
  • Driven investments in clean energy and infrastructure.

The report emphasizes Tranzero’s holistic approach, where innovation and collaboration have been key to success.

The Road Ahead for Tranzero Initiative

Between 2024 and 2025, the Tranzero Initiative will expand to include more stakeholders under the name Tranzero Energy. This initiative will establish an industrial cluster focused on fossil-free energy for businesses located in Hisingen, Gothenburg. Through this expansion, Port of Gothenburg strengthens its position as a global leader in sustainable transport.

An important milestone will be reached in January 2025, when Tranzero Initiative is officially recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Transitioning Industrial Cluster – a recognized model for how industrial clusters can accelerate the shift towards fossil-free energy.

Why Choose the Port of Gothenburg?

The Port of Gothenburg continues to lead the way in sustainable transport through innovation, collaboration, and a strong commitment to fossil-free solutions. Together, we are shaping a future where transport is not only efficient but also climate-neutral.
