A forward-looking development

Since the 1960s, the core of the Port of Gothenburg has gradually shifted towards the island Hisingen. The continuous development in maritime and transportation sectors has resulted in the centralization of cargo handling, the so-called cargo hub, extending from Älvsborgs bridge to Arendal and Torshamnen.

Background and rationale

The ongoing and planned urban development in the city of Gothenburg, such as Masthuggskajen, justifies the relocation of the central ferry terminal. Following a dialogue in 2020, Stena Line has expressed a desire to relocate its operations to outer port, considering the proximity to existing infrastructure, logistics operations, and the automotive industry.

The Stena Terminal is serviced by 250,000 trucks annually. The relocation will thus result in a significant reduction of heavy traffic in the central parts of the city. The areas currently used by Stena Line's existing operations will be returned to the city and contribute to its continued urban development.

Scope

The project will encompass several key components, including the reinforcement of quays, dredging, repositioning of pipelines, demolition of properties, land connection, and the conversion of an existing building into a modern ferry terminal. The existing operations in Arendal will be moved to the soon-to-be-completed terminal area, Arendal 2, creating space for the new terminal and its operations.
